I need help remembering the name of a great book I read about a gladiator in the 70s?

I read this book in the 70s and I can't remember the name or author. The plot went something like: There was a gladiator who was stabbed with something poisonous and fell into an icy crevasse. Some people in the present time find him, and restore him to life. He is extremely violent and they try to rehabilitate him.|||If you find out, please let me know because that sounds really interesting!
