In yu-gi-oh does a gladiator beasts' effect that lets it return to the deck to summon it work if destroyed?

In the yugioh card game there are gladiator beast monsters that when they do battle with another monster. At the end of the battle step, They can be returned to the deck to summon another gladiator beast from their deck. If the gladiator beast is sent to the graveyard by battle can you still send them back to the deck? I have a friend who uses them and we're not sure if the effect would only work if it survived the battle or no matter what.|||Gladiator Beasts cannot tag out if they are destroyed by battle. They must be protected by cards like shrink, waboku, book of moon etc. They can only tag out if they survive until the end of the battle phase.
